YourGstaad presents: Selina, Chef de Rang

Hello Selina, how long have you been in Gstaad, and where do you work?
I’ve been in Gstaad since May 2023, and I work at the HUUS Gstaad Hotel as a Chef de Rang.

Did you always want to work in service?
Honestly, no. But after my first internship from school, I realized that I really enjoy it!

How did you become a Chef de Rang? Where did you study, and where did you work before?
I attended a school that focused on economics, languages, cooking, and service. Before coming to Gstaad, I worked on a brewery estate.

What is your next career goal?
After the summer season, I will start studying economics and hotel management. Once I finish, my goal is to manage a hotel.

What are your typical tasks as a Chef de Rang? What does your usual workday look like?
I mainly work in the à la carte restaurant La Vue, where I’m responsible for overall guest service: seating guests, advising and selling, taking orders, offering wine recommendations, handling wine service and food service, and finally, of course, preparing an accurate bill and bidding farewell to the guests.

What do you particularly like about your job?
I really enjoy working with people, and I find it especially exciting at HUUS to interact with guests and colleagues from various countries, languages, and cultures.

What are the challenges for you?
The biggest challenge for me is dealing with guests who complain loudly or attack me personally—whatever the reason may be. I’m a rather calm person, and I take such situations very seriously. But fortunately, this isn’t part of the everyday routine—complaints are a very rare exception here.

What do you need to know and be able to do to do your job well? What personal qualities are required?
You should be good at dealing with people and be able to keep a cool head and stay focused even in stressful situations.

What do you enjoy doing most in your free time?
The Saanenland area, with its pristine nature, is very beautiful. I enjoy walking, hiking, and biking, or doing something with my friends, which is also important to me.

What do you like about Gstaad, and do you have any tips for people who are new to working in Gstaad?
The nature and landscape are beautiful. Although Saanen and Gstaad are actually just small villages, you meet many people from all over the world with whom you can do a lot of activities. My tip is: be open to new experiences and new connections.

Thank you, Selina!
