Quereinstieg in die Hotellerie? Das geht ohne Weiteres, egal ob du aus der Schweiz kommst oder aus einem anderen Land und egal, was du vorher gearbeitet hast. Marco im Hotel Huus in Gstaad Saanen hat uns von seiner Geschichte erzählt.

Seit wann arbeitest Du im HUUS Gstaad Hotel?
Ich bin vor 13 Jahren nach Gstaad gekommen und arbeite seitdem im HUUS Gstaad Hotel. Damals hiess das Haus noch Steigenberger Hotel.
Was sind deine Aufgabenbereiche?
Ich arbeite jetzt als Receptionist und da kümmere ich mich um Emails und Telefonate mit Gästen, checke Gäste ein und aus und helfe ihnen ganz allgemein in allen Belangen.
Hast du auch noch weitere Aufgabenbereiche?
Ich bin sehr flexibel und helfe gern auch in anderen Abteilungen aus. Mir geht es darum, dass die Gäste glücklich sind und immer wieder kommen, ich möchte eine gute Atmosphäre schaffen gegenüber den Gästen, aber auch den Kollegen.
Seit wann bist Du in Gstaad?
Vor 13 Jahren im November bin ich nach Gstaad gekommen, da war ich zwanzig. Eigentlich wollte ich nur vier oder fünf Jahre bleiben, aber mit der Zeit habe ich hier Freunde gefunden und eine Familie gegründet. Jetzt habe ich zwei Kinder, die Gstaad lieben und so sind wir hier geblieben. Gstaad ist gut zum Arbeiten, aber auch für Familien. Wir lieben die Berge und fühlen uns wohl und sicher hier – das ist heutzutage sehr wichtig.
Warum arbeitest du als Receptionist, wolltest Du das schon immer?
Ich habe im Hotel als Reinigungskraft im Housekeeping angefangen. Ich habe mich sehr bemüht, jeden Tag etwas Neues zu lernen und mich hochzuarbeiten. Vor einem Jahr wurde mir dann der Job an der Reception als neue Herausforderung angeboten. Ich habe sie angenommen, auch wenn es nicht ganz einfach war – hauptsächlich wegen der Sprache und weil ich anfangs Angst hatte, etwas falsch zu machen. Aber ich habe auch das geschafft und bin sehr stolz auf mich. Ich bin weit gekommen für jemanden, dessen Arbeitsleben als Erntehelfer in Portugal begonnen hat.
Ich liebe, was ich tue und möchte keinen anderen Job mehr. Mir gefällt besonders der direkte Kontakt mit den Gästen und dass ich jeden Tag etwas Neues lerne von Menschen, die aus aller Welt zu uns kommen.

How long have you been working at HUUS Gstaad Hotel?
I came to Gstaad 13 years ago and have been working at HUUS Gstaad Hotel ever since – back then the hotel was called the Steigenberger Hotel.
What are your responsibilities?
I now work as a receptionist and take care of emails and phone calls with guests, check guests in and out and generally help our guests in all matters.
Are there any other areas of responsibility as well?
I’m very flexible and happy to help out in the other departments as well. For me it’s about making sure our guests are happy and keep coming back. I want to create a good atmosphere towards the guests, but also towards the colleagues.
How long have you been in Gstaad?
I came to Gstaad 13 years ago in November, when I was twenty. At the time I wanted to stay only four or five years but with time I made friends here and started a family. Now I have two children who love Gstaad and so we stayed here. Gstaad is good for working but also for families. We love the mountains and feel comfortable and safe here – that’s very important nowadays.
Why do you work as a receptionist, is that something you always wanted?
I started in the hotel as a cleaner in housekeeping. I tried very hard to learn something new every day and work my way up. Then, a year ago, I was offered the job at the reception as a new challenge. I took it, even though it wasn’t easy – mainly because of the language and because I was afraid of doing something wrong at first. But I managed the challenge and I am very proud of myself. I have come a long way for someone whose working life started as a fruit picker in Portugal.
I love what I do and wouldn’t want another job. I especially like the direct contact with the guests and that I learn something new every day from people who come to us from all over the world.
