Was sind so deine typischen Aufgaben?
Was gefällt Dir an Deinem Job?
Wo siehst Du Dich in fünf Jahren?
Was machst du am liebsten in deiner Freizeit?
Was gefällt dir an der Destination Gstaad?

Hi Bruno, where do you come from and where do you work in Gstaad?
I come from Portugal and have worked in housekeeping at The Alpina Gstaad for 3 seasons now.
How did you come to work in housekeeping?
I studied hospitality and worked in hotels for 4 years – mainly F&B, reception, kitchen and technical, but never housekeeping. I was interested to see what housekeeping is all about, especially the challenge of arrival and departure turnarounds. Also, because I don’t speak German or French there were more opportunities for me in this department.
What are your duties in the housekeeping department?
I’m training to become a supervisor in my department. I must manage the staff on the floor, ensure that all guestrooms are cleaned and learn the fasted way to do things correctly – efficiency and consistency are important.
Right now I’m also helping the new staff to settle in, to get to know the teams, to be proactive, to integrate fast into the new setting.
What do you like about your job?
The housekeeping department is like a family – we have a great team spirit. Most of the team is Portuguese, so we know each other’s culture. But even non-Portuguese are well integrated.
I really appreciate it when guests tell me about their positive feedback about their stay and when they share their recognition.
What is your advice for others who want to work or make a career in housekeeping?
Be proactive, show self-responsibility and be a team player! Don’t wait for someone tell you what to do, show initiative. If you’re unsure of something, feel free to ask for help or advice.
It’s a tough job, nobody expects you to know everything from the start, but when in the rooms or in public areas, we need to keep our eyes open to make sure that everything is always impeccable.
What is your advice to have more fun at work?
Have a good collaboration with your colleagues, it makes time go by faster.
Do the work for yourself and not just because it’s the job that you have been allocated to.
Concentrate at work, and then have real fun afterwards.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
I would like to stay in housekeeping and grow to gain a management position. I feel that there are better-paid opportunities here in Switzerland than back home in Portugal at the moment. I want to push myself to develop myself further.
What do you like to do in your time off?
I have my car here, so I enjoy travelling around and visiting different sites. A few weeks ago I went with some colleagues to visit the amazing underground lake of St Leonard, which is near Sion. It’s really worth a visit and I definitely recommend you to see it! I also like the Pool at the Sportzentrum. Otherwise we enjoy staying home sometimes to read, play games and socialize.
How do you like Gstaad and its region? Do you have advice for other people who are new to Gstaad?
I enjoy the seasonality of the destination, especially the change of climate in winter. If you enjoy nature, you will love the views and outdoor activities. Don’t miss out on some of the events that take place, especially during summer, like the tennis!
Don’t be afraid of the change or of learning something new – there are great opportunities and if it really doesn’t work out, then you can change again. Right now I feel very well here.
Danke, Bruno!
